Since the dawn of creation a deadly presence of darkness has been on the rampage. After being stripped of his power and cast out of heaven, Satan devised a malicious plan. Calling forth his highest-ranking officials, he said, “Stop fighting amongst yourselves! Let’s get even with God by harming his most treasured possession.” Not long after, a spirit of deception entered the serpent and tempted Adam and Eve to commit the first sin.
After Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit, their eyes were opened and they acquired the knowledge of good and evil. Once the sinister presence of darkness entered their hearts, they could no longer interact with God the same as they had before. God being perfect light, holiness, and truth could no longer remain in the presence of his children after they had become defiled with evil.
Immediately after the fall, God devised a plan to win back the hearts of his beloved children. He made a decision to allow the devil to roam the earth because he wanted everybody to make a choice in their acceptance of his love and fellowship. He also wanted to test the hearts of his children to see which ones were true. Without the seductive presence of darkness roaming the earth, his children would be deprived of the ability to make a choice—would they choose a love affair with their Creator, or would they choose sin, sickness, and eternal separation?
Because God only wanted to develop authentic friendships with those who were truly interested in his goodness, he allowed Satan and the vast army of fallen angels to seduce as many humans as possible. If the devil could ensnare a soul with sin, he was allowed to take possession of that soul for all eternity. If God could establish a passionate love affair with anyone, he would allow that person to live in heavenly bliss for all eternity. There was only one rule—neither side could violate anyone’s free will.
To make sure the devil would play fair, God stripped the angelic beings of their supernatural powers. The only thing the fallen angels could do is tempt the humans to sin, but once anyone committed a sin, the demons were allowed to access their lives. The more sinful agreements the humans made with the fallen angels, the more control the demons would acquire.
In the same way, God wanted to fill his children with the power of his Holy Spirit. From the very beginning, all God wanted was intimate fellowship with his beloved creation. When his beloved would cry out to be filled with his loving presence, they would be accepted, cleansed, and purified. When a person wanted to serve the false gods of sinfulness, the demons were allowed to fill that person’s heart with a desire for more evil.
After the spiritual laws of the universe had been set in place, God immediately went to work with Cain and Abel. According to Genesis 4:3-5, Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel for his part brought of the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
The Lord tried to work with Cain by establishing a passionate love affair with his beloved son, but Cain’s heart had become hardened. A deadly presence of darkness was pushing him to work harder and produce more wealth. He didn’t want to give the best of his produce to the Lord. He had worked hard all day to acquire what he owned and had already made a decision to give his unwanted leftovers to the Lord.
God tried to explain the spiritual laws of the universe to Cain in Genesis 4:7-8 by saying, “If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.” Unfortunately, the deadly presence of evil that was lurking at Cain’s door was too strong. Soon a demonic force filled Cain’s heart with evil intent. Evil spirits of anger and revenge manipulated his thoughts until Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him.
The deadly assault continues to this very day. Satan wants to establish his kingdom by driving the presence of God out of his domain. God wants to fill all true believers with his miracle-working power. He wants to establish a deeper and more passionate relationship with all his children.
If there are any demonic or New Age spirits interfering with your ability to commune with the Lord, ask your heavenly Father to remove them. Invite the Holy Spirit into your heart right now. Allow yourself to be transformed by the power and presence of the Lord, Jesus Christ.
